History and Folklore Museum

Miyajima has a facinating history. Because of the jealous goddess said to reside there, it is known as a dangerous place for couples to visit together, and births and burials have traditionally not been allowed on the island. The Miyajima Municipal History and Folklore Museum, containing the original residence of a merchant family, a lovely garden and numerous exhibits depicting the lives of people on the island, provides insight into the sacred and secular life of the people.
