Onomichi
Onomichi is a beautiful quaint city lying midway along the northern shore of the Seto Inland Sea. Its history dates back over 1200 years. having escaped the devastation of World Warr II, the city remains much the same as it was centuries ago. Many of its temples and shrines have been designated as national treasures. Inside the city limits is a steep mountain, accessible by ropeway or on foot, known as Senkoji Park, the most famous landmark in Onomichi and known nationwide. Scores if temples and shrines dot the landscape and provide interesting hous of wandering among their many connecting corridors and staircases. Among the most prominent are Senkoji, Tenneiji, Jikoji, Fukuzenji, Jikanji, Josenji and Saikokuji, and Kibitsuhiko shrine. There is also a "walk of literary artists" which displays poems and signatures of well-known artists, doctors and business people engraved on large stones. Onomichi has long been a popular place among writers and artists.
Transportation:
Take the JR train (Sanyo line) bound for Okayama from Hiroshima
Station, and get off at Onomichi (about 1 hour & 20 minutes).
The Shinkansen is also available; get off at Shin Onomichi,
about 35 minutes.
