Takehara


This beautiful little town contains an old historic section that perfectly exemplifies "old" Japan. The town is surrounded by and contains many bamboo trees, thus the name Takehara, or "bamboo field". Among the buildings along its quaint streets are several old houses (Matsuzaka-tei, Yoshii-tei and others), the Town Conservation Center, Museum of Historical and Folk Materials, the Taketsuru Sake Brewery, and a beautiful temple called Saihoji that is reached by mounting a long flight of stone steps and commands an excellent view of Takehara. A perfect day trip from Hiroshima, wandering along its streets will take you back to the Edo period when Takehara was a bustling salt producing center.

Transportaion:
    Take the JR Kure Line to Takehara station, about 1.5 hours.
    A 15 minute walk will take you to the old town.
