Soup, Noodles Are Slurped
Those Japanese who have not been taught European etiquette do not consider slurping bad manners. It's altogether proper. They have been slurping their own soup for centuries, so what's the difference with Western soup?
The Japanese also slurp noodles. Soba, udon, somen and other noodle-type dishes would be tasteless if tey weren't slurped, according to the Japanese. Anyone who eats his noodles without a sound might be considered odd.
