Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park



A clolorful region covering several thousand square miles, Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park lies within the Navajo Reservation in Arizona and Utah; it is near Four Corners, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah meet. The park contains Mystery Valley, where isolated monoliths of red standstone tower as much as 1,000 feet above the valley floor. It is reached via scenic US 163 from Kayenta, Ariz., and from Gouldings and Mexican Hat, Utah.
The visitor center, 4 miles southeast of US 163, provides information on self-guiding tours. Guided tour from the center are offered daily; camping and picnicking are permitted. Hourse-bak and four-wheel-drive trips through Monument Valley can be arranged through agencies in Kayenta and in Utah at Bluff, Mexican Hat and Monument Valley. Over-night accommodations also are available; reservations are recommended.
The park and visitor center are open daily 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., May-Sept; 8-5, rest of year (weather permitting); Thanksgiving 8-noon. Last admission 30 minutes before closing. Closed Jan. 1 and Dec. 25. Admission $2.50; over 60, $1; under 8 free. Phone (801)727-3353.
